Are pocket watches a thing of the past?

Pocket watches are a nod to the past, but they are increasing in popularity today. Time-keeping tools may have been around for thousands of years, but pocket watches didn't make the scene until the 1500s. Until that time, a clock's mechanism was so large and heavy that few considered the possibility of a portable clock, or inventing pocket watches.

Once invented, pocket watches were all the craze. But they weren't as sophisticated as later pocket watches would be. The earliest of pocket watches had no covering to protect the face or the hour hand. In the 1700s English watchmakers began creating gold and silver pair cases to slide pocket watches into to keep them safe. If you are collecting cases along with pocket watches, make sure they are a match. If the manufacturers name or mark on a pair case doesn't match the name on the watch, then the pair case is not the original, but a replacement.

Later in the history of pocket watches, glass crystals were added to protect the dial but because they were translucent, they still had to be removed to read the time.
What makes a good pocket watch? If you are starting a collection of pocket watches, it's important to know that when you buy pocket watches, it is not always about getting the best deal. In fact it's less about the bargain and more about paying a fair and reasonable price for pocket watches that will give you pleasure to own and even carry around. Here area few tips.

First, learn all you can about the different makes of pocket watches. Get a good reference guide on pocket watches to help you out.

Second, decide on the type of pocket watch you would like to collect. If you'd like to start collecting something that is relatively inexpensive yet has the potential for big rewards, start collecting antique pocket watches!

Third, find a good seller of great, collectible pocket watches. In fact, if you are seeking the best in fine pocket watches, or any timepiece or collector, there is no finer place to visit than Eagle National Mint.

A new network marketing opportunity has emerged that deals with gold and silver coins. Numismatics (new miss MA ticks) was the hobby of kings. It is the collection of rare or limited coins from all over the world, similar to an Art Collector's activities. A coin collector or coin specialist is called a Numismatist (new MIZ ma tist) and the study of coins is Numismatology (new MIZ ma TOL o jee). But why is this important to network marketers?
I:2:J

Everywhere you look these days there are signs and ads for buying gold and silver. Some say it is a sign of a shaky world economy. Some say it is simply that the value of gold and silver are on a constant rise over a long period of time. To an entrepreneur, the smell of profit lingers in the air. People who buy gold and silver depend on the seller's ignorance of the market or the seller's need for immediate cash. He then gambles on the continued rise of the metal's value.

How does this relate to Numismatics. Well, frankly, it doesn't. There is a large difference between collecting art, antiques, and rare or limited coins and dealing in the value of metal. Those who would profit in Numismatics would need to know the difference between bullion or "slab" coins and a graded or certified coin. Simply put, the value of the real Mona Lisa is not the same as a print.

When you buy bullion or coins that have not been graded or certified by a licensed agency, you are dealing in the price of metal. An American Eagle silver dollar, for example, if presented to a cashier, would be valued at one dollar. It's weight in silver right now, though, is $18. If you took nice pictures of it and auctioned it off on eBay, you might possibly get more. If you purchased a certified coin and had it encapsulated, you could get even more for it.

Whether you buy or sell as a home business or as a consumer, it is vital that you know these differences in value. One concerned eBay member issued a warning: http://reviews.ebay.com/The-best-coin-graders-NGC-ANACS-and-the-worst_W0QQugidZ10000000003785971 to inform eBay consumers about the two best coin graders (NGC and ANACS) and giving a review on the rest.
An expert is needed to determine the value of the coin. This is called grading and according to the report above, NGC and ANACS are the most reliable.

Some factors that can make a coin more valuable are age, lack of availability and beauty. Numismatists have different tastes but one constant is the MS70 grading. It is certified to be perfect and encased for its protection. There may be many coins but not that many certified to be MS70 and this increases its value.

To prove this, simply do some research online. For example, one dealer online sells three different versions of the American Eagle silver dollar: a roll of "mint" coins for $459 ($22.95 a coin); an MS69 certified for $29.95; and an MS70 certified for $125.

Why? Because of the condition of the coin, established by an expert. This is how Numismatists value their coins. An antique collector does not want a tarnished and dented antique silver tray. It's that simple.

To get an idea of how much a purchased coin will be worth in the future, one can only look to the past. Using the charts below, you can see the major differences over the years in both age and grading. An MS70 is clearly the better choice. (To magnify the chart, use your Ctrl and + buttons on your keyboard)
I:0:J
I:1:T

Marketing gold and silver coins may very well be a lucrative business of the future. In making your choice, be sure to inform yourself well on the grade of coin and the demand in the market. At the very least, your stock is nowhere near perishable.

There are collectors that specifically find classic editions of coins that existed during the period from 1892 to 1954. These coins have marked events or may signify the work of royalty during that period. There are those collectors that prefer the modern series that are very distinct as well. One modern collection is that of the quarter dollars that represent the 50 states of the US. Minting and circulation started in 1999 and will continue until 2008. These are specially made editions available for collectors.

Many collectible coins are made of copper and a collector may encounter problems in maintaining their features and appearance. A person collecting this type of coin should learn how to maintain and take proper care of these expensive collections. Copper coins should be cleaned correctly and must be preserved the same way professional collectors treat their coins.

Professional collectors clean their coins by the process of placing the coins in a container that is airtight. This is a safe way to preserve the features of the coins. Because of the coins' years of circulation, there is the possibility of a coin accumulating encrustations, coatings, dirt, and other problems on a coin's face. These accumulations may cause pitting and corrosion to the surface of the copper coin. The corroded portions should be removed properly without making any scratches.

There are products available that are made especially for coin cleaning. Coin suppliers have these products that are specifically made for coin maintenance and cleaning in stock. One product made for this purpose is MS70 which removes corrosion and other surface dirt. It is advisable to use rubber gloves for the protection of your hands, as MS70 can dry the skin but this should be of little concern because it is not that harsh on the skin. A soft toothbrush may help with cleaning and removing any dirt that is in the surface of the coin. Improvement in the appearance of the coin will be seen after it has been soaked and cleaned. If satisfaction is not met on the cleanliness and appearance of the coin, he may add baking soda to neutralize the MS70 and soak it in warm water.

After he is through with the soaking, he may dry the coin using a Blue Ribbon coin cleaner and preservative; he may apply a coat and dry it for a couple of days then wipe the damp parts with soft cotton balls and place it on a small cardboard with a space on the center.

If he finds discoloring on the coin, he may use Dellars Darkener after he has soaked it in MS70. He may use this product before he applies the Blue Ribbon cleaner and preservative until he is satisfied with the cleanliness of his coin. Once satisfied with the new appearance of the coin, he may again return it to its set or collection . The next step would be maintenance and preservation the collection. Here are some tips on how to take care of coin collections:

1.The coin should be protected from exposure to any kind of elements. It is also important not to scratch the coins; they should be handled with care to avoid scratches on the surface of the coins.

2.It is safe to store the coins in plastic cases or pockets that are made specifically for coin collections and sets. These cases and pockets can protect the coins from dirt and scratches.

3.Coins should be cleaned properly using vinegar, lemon juice, ammonia or rubbing alcohol.

4.If there is unwanted dirt that is hard to remove on the surface, chemical products for cleaning like Tarnex may be used. This option may be used if vinegar and lemon juice were not able to remove the dirt.

5.It is very important to remember that the value of the coin may depreciate if the coin has been cleaned. It is recommended to seek the advice of an expert on other ways of preserving a coin

Many coin collectors believe that a person should never ever clean their collection because they believe that any product that is applied to the coin will affect the surface. A person should know how to preserve their collection and avoid dirt from touching the coins.

Collecting fossils

Wherever you are, you might be standing on fossils. Think about it. Fossils are the preserved remains of past life on earth. Every plant, every animal, every fungus, every bacterium eventually dies. If they get buried and preserved, fossils are formed.

So much out there! Fossils can be mineralized bones, teeth, shells, wood, or actual unaltered material from an organism. Fossils can take the form of frozen mammoth flesh, bones. eggs, nests, footprints, leaf impressions, burrows, and more are examples of fossils.

The name fossil comes from the Latin word fossus, which means "something dug up". Many fossils are from extinct groups, whether that be a small group such as a species, or a much larger including a family, super family, class or phylum. But there are no age requirements on a findings being called fossils. The probability of a deceased organism undergoing fossilization and being preserved is a very rare event that can only occur under various unlikely circumstances. But still, there are so many types of fossils out there yet to be uncovered.

Why collect fossils? Well, who doesnt want a dinosaur egg in their living room. Or a necklace of shark teeth. There are so many fun fossils and castings of fossils out there, collecting fossils is a unique hobby. I find the diversity of fossils fascinating. In my collection I have Trilobite fossils, sabercat fossils, dragonfly fossils, bird fossils, fossil fish, fossil ammonites, mosasaur fossils, crinoid fossils and many other fossils.

Most fossils are found in sedimentary rock, which is made of sand, silt and mud. Sediments are often carried in water, and deposited in layers or strata. So people who hunt for fossils look for rock that is stratified. The oldest known fossils are usually considered to be stromatolites. These fossils are considered to be 3.5 billion years old. Just think of all that's happened in the past 3.5 billion years.

How do you start collecting your own fossils? The easiest way to start a personal collection of fossils is to go to an established dealer of fossils and other collectibles. Over time I have found Eagle National Mint to be one of the best providers of fossils.

Coin collecting is said to be the "Hobby of the Kings." Coin collecting is different from money hoarding. Collecting coins as an art form can be traced back to the 14th century. Today, people all over the world are collecting coins. Some collect it for their value, some just like the sheer fun that they get from getting their hands on different coins.

If one is interested in making coin collecting a hobby, he can very well do so. It is a hobby which does not require a certain skill and it can be done by almost everyone.

There are many different kinds of coin collectors. There are those who do it for fun, and others do in a more serious manner.

Informal coin collecting

Most coin collectors, especially the children, start out as informal coin collectors. They are laid-back collectors which do not have a specific goal in collecting coins. They might collect coins from different countries or from different time periods without any intention of being serious about it.

Inquisitive coin collecting

Once the informal coin collector starts noticing the details of the coins, he becomes an inquisitive coin collector. This kind of coin collector won't bother much into spending money to get coins. He merely wants to appreciate the coins. Soon, he will start to put them in containers or albums.

Advanced coin collecting

An advanced coin collector will collect coins with a specific target in mind. He may want to collect coins from a certain nation, or a certain time period.

There are many tracks which coin collectors pursue when engaging in their hobby. Here are some of the ways one can use in collecting coins:

Coin collection according to nation

Many coin collectors would want to collect coins from a certain nation during a certain period of time. This kind of coin collection lets the collector travel the globe through the coins. People may want to collect coins from countries they had visited.

Historical coin collection

Another way of collecting coins is by taking in mind history. Many coin collectors engage in collecting coins during a certain period in history like wars or declarations of independence.

Error coins

There are people who find collecting coins with errors exciting because these kinds of coins are rare nowadays.

There are many ways to collect coins and each way is as fun as the other. One must feel the hobby first before he decides whether to stick with it or not. Coin collecting can require certain amounts of money and the collector must be wise in engaging in such a hobby.

Coin collecting shops with a physical presence are few and far between. Unless they are lucky enough to live in a major town with a coin supply store or could come across a rare find in a pawnbrokers, numismatists were once confined to either waiting for their local coin club to put on a coin collecting show or traveling to the big city. The Internet has changed all this, and several coin collecting shops now have online presences. In this article, we will look at a few of the biggest.

The Coin Shop

The Coin Shop has the distinction of being the first coin collecting shop to trade online, having started its website in 1994, back when the only people with Internet access were university students, the military and a few hardcore techies. It prides itself on the accurate grading and fair pricing of its products, from the common to the rare, and also supplies wholesale.

The Coin Shop's website has sections on state quarters, dollar coins, Euros, obsolete coins and ancient and medieval coins. It also sells books and software for coin collectors.

Lynn Coins

Lynn Coins is a Tennessee-based coin collecting shop that has been in business for over 30 years. It has two websites, lynncoins.com and LynnCoins.net. The former is the older of the two sites. It has a rather old-fashioned, cluttered design that makes it rather difficult to navigate, but contains a lot of informational content that has not yet been migrated to the new site.

LynnCoins.net is much more attractive to look at, but only contains the catalog part of the old site at the time of writing. It is probably advisable to look at both sites to make sure that the item you want is on there.

About Coin Collecting

About Coin Collecting is not so much a coin collecting shop as an informational website run by the Auburn, Maine based jewelry store Republic Jewelry, that also links to their coin catalog. Their wealth of introductory articles on the history of coins and the art of coin collecting make the site the ideal first stop for the novice coin collector.

The site seems to only carry US coins, but they also sell related items such as coin folders, price guides and even state quarter teddy bears, embroidered with each state's name and date of entry to the union, with a clear vinyl pocket to store that state's quarter.

I started playing CityVille a couple of weeks after it launched. I was surprised how addicting the new Zynga game is. So today for all you other addicts out their I have some easy tips If your just beginning out.

Population - As soon as you begin work on getting that population maxed. Start building community buildings so you can raise it. They will be the backbone of your economy the more people you have the more steady it will be. So you can focus on other things. Community buildings can be built anywhere you wish to, but be careful when you construct homes and business offices. Strictly build them all next to any sidewalks or roads. It will attract attention.

Farming - This is an important part you need to master. Your farming provides supplies for your businesses. If you can see that your farming is doing well then back it up by building plenty of high profit businesses. Selecting the right crops is crucial. I recommend planting crops that give high supplies with relatively good time to harvest.

Space - You will notice early on that with all these new projects space can be a problem. I always decide what I want in each section before start randomly putting stuff down.

Decorations - The most important factor of decorations is that they can earn coin near established community and residential buildings. Once you put them near buildings they allow you to increase the rent fees that you can draw from citizens. Just be careful when your starting to put them down always check to make sure that the area can afford the higher prices.

Collecting - Use your energy on highest payout first to lowest payout buildings last and the same when you refill goods. Don't forget your community buildings as they usually give you energy.

Play Regularly - As with almost all Facebook games if you play everyday you get certain perks and benefits.

Also try to keep an eye on any franchises if you plan to invest a better income in your game, it helps you collect a lot of points and coins. Franchises are normal stores which are built everywhere, in your and your friends cities. Those our six easy tips to begin your addicting CityVille career.

Probably, there are many people who have no idea what "numismatics" means as it looks a totally strange word. Anyway, when explaining that it means "collection of coins", everybody will immediately understand! It is not surprising at all since numismatics seems to be one of the most spread hobbies and it often turns into an obsession for the people. The collection of precious metal coins is also considered to be a "hobby for the richest". Can you guess why? The answer is more than obvious: it is because only the wealthiest people can make a thorough and attention-worthy collection- it costs a lot of money!

Basically, the collectors of metal coins aim at gaining as many coins as possible: the more, the better. Anyway, they also try to find very rare, and respectively, precious metal coins so that their collection becomes more valuable and admiration-worthy.

But when talking about precious and rare metal coins, we just could not skip which coins attract more interest than any others. For instance, those could be coins which are not old but that were emitted in an extremely small number. The national banks of different countries sometimes emit new coins in 1000 or 5000 numbers. It is not difficult to come up with the idea that an obsessed collector will certainly want to add the coin in his or her collection. Here comes the paradox: it could be a coin of 20 cents but the collector could spend $10.000 or even more depending on how rare the coin in reality is.

So, you already know that if the coin is rare, it is very likely to cost a lot of money even if it was emitted a year ago. But that's not all determining a coin as valuable or non-valuable!

Of course, if the metal coins originated from a distant place and was emitted a thousand of years ago, it will be precious! You may not believe it but coins like those could reach the incredible price of $60.000 or even more. You already must understand why numismatics is called "hobby for the richest", don't you? Anyway, it is important to mention that rare and historically significant metal coins must not be owned since that could cause a huge cultural loss. Such coins should certainly be kept and exposed in museums.

Unfortunately, many numismatists are used to crossing the line between legal and illegal. It is just their desire- it is the desire that makes them want to own such coins even when it is not allowed, even not morally!

Unfortunately, some collectors do not realize that their obsession could lead to great cultural and historical losses. After all, when old and ancient metal coins are being discussed, everybody should know that they should be shown to everyone- they are just not supposed to be owned!

To sum up, collecting precious metal coins is a great hobby but there should always be a line that should not be crossed. A "hobby" should never do harm to the culture and history of a country. All numismatics should keep that in mind.

The United States Mint first issued the American Silver Eagle bullion coin in 1986. This represented the release of the first silver bullion coin with weight, content, and purity guaranteed by the United States government. The coins were immediately popular with precious metals investors and coin collectors alike, selling more than 10 million coins in the first two months of availability.

The United States Mint has produced Silver Eagles in both bullion coin format as well as collectible proof format. The bullion coins are distributed through a network of authorized purchasers and sold based on the prevailing price of silver plus an established mark up. The proof versions of the coin are typically offered annually at fixed prices. These coins are sold directly to the public and come in special packaging with a certificate of authenticity. Proof Silver Eagles had been issued from 1986 to 2008, before the offering was unfortunately canceled in 2009.

The popular proof Silver Eagle had been canceled for reasons related to the economic turmoil which occurred at the end of 2008. In the search for safe haven investments, some turned to physical precious metals, an historic store of value. This caused increased demand for the Silver Eagle bullion coins, and the United States Mint had difficulty coping. By law they are required to produce the coins in amounts needed to meet the public's full demand.

In order to cope with the situation, the US Mint suspended bullion coin sales on several occasions and allocated rationed available supplies to authorized purchasers. An additional step, which was not popular with collectors, was the cancellation of the traditional collectible proof and uncirculated versions of the coin for 2009, since these are not required to be produced under current law.

Heavy demand for Silver Eagle bullion coins has continued into this year. Although the US Mint managed to increase production numbers, they still fall short of the full public demand. For the year to date, the US Mint is selling an average of 3 million coins per month. The status of collectible versions of the coin remains in doubt, although there has been some discussion of a change in law that would allow the coins to be produced.
