Ultra High Relief Gold coins were issued by the US Mint in January, 2009. The design of the Double Eagle gold coin is taken from the original of the Double Eagle liberty design by Augustus Saint-Gauden. With the advancements made in technology this beautiful gold coin can now be seen in Ultra High Relief as envisioned by Saint-Gauden back in 1907.

The original ultra high relief sculpture of 1907 by Saint-Gaudens has been brought up-to-date with the addition of 4 stars which represent the 50 states of America coupled with an additional inscription - "In God We Trust" - on the reverse side positioned underneath the gold eagle, which was not on the original coin. Plus, because the 2009 gold coin has been made of 24 karat gold the coins are more easily shaped and a small border has also been added to help achieve a more even edge.
